Phaeochromocytoma/Paraganglioma  [november 2007]

INFORMATION

54-year-old male patient, without significant medical history and with no known allergies, for two years had been presenting episodically with pulsating migraines, rise in pulse rate and hypertension that was difficult to control. The physical exam was completely normal, apart from a BMI of 20 kg/m2 and a blood pressure of 160/94. As part of the work up, an abdominal ultrasound was carried out and a complex mass, partially solid, was found in the left para-aortic area in the vicinity of the medial left kidney.

There was increased intra-tumoral vascularisation. Blood hematology and biochemistry tests were normal, except for a blood glucose level of 122 mg/dL. Urine and its sediments were normal; ECG and CXR (AP) were also normal.
